What is a root canal? A root canal is actually a misnomer and really only describes the space inside each root where the pulp complex resides. Root canal therapy or endodontic therapy is actually the procedure that is performed and is one of the most common dental procedures performed. This common treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges.
At the center of your tooth is a space which houses the pulp complex. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels, nerves and other structures that help to build the surrounding tooth and provide some protection against invading bacteria. Inflammation or infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks or repeated dental procedures. These procedures cause inflammation which in turn damages the pulp causing pain and subsequently infection. Symptoms of inflammation or infection vary, but normally start out as temperature sensitivity. Symptoms can also include pain or swelling of the surrounding area. Each case is unique. This is why it is imperative that the proper diagnosis is made.
How is root canal therapy performed? The injured pulp or infected pulp space is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the diagnosis. Success for this type of treatment occurs in over 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. Normally local anesthesia is used to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we can provide other forms of anxiety relief including nitrous oxide “laughing gas”, oral sedation or IV sedation. Please inform the office if you think any of these other forms will be necessary so we can schedule appropriately. You will be able to drive home after your treatment providing you do not have any oral or IV sedation.
