Traumatic Injuries

There are a wide variety of dental injuries that can occur.  Each case is unique and thus early diagnosis is critical.  Many times the fate of the tooth depends on the steps taken in the first hour after the accident.

Traumatic injuries can affect the crown portion of the tooth which is visible, but more importantly it also affects the pulp inside the tooth.  These effects are not always realized at the time of the accident and can occur many years after the incident.

Treatment and prognosis vary widely but depend on the severity and the extent of the injury.  Regardless of the injury, it is necessary for a dental practitioner to evaluate and assess each injury.  A diagnosis will be made, proper treatment will be completed and the necessary follow-up care will be scheduled.

Even avulsed teeth, or teeth that have been forcibly knocked out of the mouth, can be salvaged if proper action is taken immediately.  If this occurs, try to see a dental professional as soon as possible.  Regardless of how long it will take to see a dental professional, it is necessary to try and replace the avulsed tooth.  Simply wash any foreign debris off the tooth with running water and replace in the socket as best you can.  Do not debride or scrape the tooth.
